冷暖自知 Reidan jichi, a Zen phrase of old Chinese Zen book, 景徳伝灯録, Ching-te Ch’uan teng lu in Chinese, Keitoku Dentou Roku in Japanese.
冷 = Cold, 暖 = warm, 自 = self, 知 = to know,
Literally meaning can be = You can’t really understand if it’s cold or hot unless you touch it by yourself.
Connotation can be: Thinking as if something was understood superficially by you does not mean that you really understand the essence of meaning.
